The Waldorf Astoria's New Driving Experience Lets You Test the Latest
Driving a "regular" car will never be the same again.
What is it like to drive a $200,000 supercar?
It's almost like the introduction of the Twilight Zone: space, time, and infinity blurring together—but very fast and very loud. Last year, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Waldorf Astoria’s inaugural Driving Experience: an opportunity to zip around in some of the world's most elite supercars, and it wasn't hard to see why the program has gained global popularity. I took off from the hotel's New York outpost and headed straight for the Lincoln Tunnel, leading me out of the crowded city streets and onto some wide open roads.
You never quite forget the feeling once you take a car, well exceeding 600 horsepower, through a narrow and echoing tunnel. The vibrating sounds and the power of the car bounce right off of the engine, through the steering wheel, and straight into your fingertips. The experience is completely visceral, and you'll automatically start crunching numbers in your head to figure out how you can scrape together enough pennies to purchase one—because, hey, it would surely look good sitting in your garage at home.
I drove three supercars in one session: The Ferrari 458 Spider, the McLaren MP4-12C, and the Lamborghini Murcielago, each a beautiful specimen in their own right, were at my disposal for a blissful two-and-half hours. You'd be surprised how smooth all of these cars feel even at high speeds, but I was most impressed by the raw power and handling of the Murcielago. Got no interest in cars? The Lamborghini will turn even you into a believer.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of these supercars, this year there are even more perks for hotel guests of the Waldorf Astoria, who will have special access to test drive the new 2016 Lamborghini Huracán LP 580-2 and Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder for a limited time. Each Waldorf Astoria hotel will offer 30-minute sessions, equipped with curated routes along some of the most scenic roads around the world: Those who take advantage will have the rare opportunity to open up the power from the V-10 engine, and launch from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Sitting in a supercar like the Lamborghini for the first time feels like being in the cockpit of a spaceship about to blast off to the Moon; don’t worry, all drivers are led by Lamborghini’s professional driving instructors.
The Waldorf Astoria’s Driving Experience program will unfortunately be skipping New York this year but will travel around the globe, with stops at the Waldorf Astoria Ras al Khaimah, Trianon Palace Versailles, and the Boca Raton Resort & Club, before wrapping up at the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah at the end of November.
